  1. Johann1 N. Schroedel was born about 1824 in Bavaria, Germany.

He left Bavaria, sailing from Bremen on board The Atlantic, arriving in New York on 19 September 1859. He was headed for Pittsburgh, traveling alone (with no other Schroedels), age 36, and a tailor.

He married Katharina Himmelein sometime before 1861. She was sixteen years younger, born about 1840 in Bavaria. She arrived in New York City on 20 October 1860, bound for Pittsburgh. It is likely they married soon after her arrival. We do not know if they met in Germany or in the U.S.

In Pittsburgh, Johann continued to practice his trade as a tailor. Around 1869, he lived at 55 Main St., but by 1870, the family had moved to Allegheny City.

He died there 28 February 1877, at the age of 53, and was buried 2 March 1877. In 1890, his grave was moved to the new Ridgelawn Cemetery. Katharina's will was made 21 October 1889. She died 20 December 1889 in Allegheny and was buried 22 December 1889 at Ridgelawn (Saint Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery) in Pittsburgh.

After a few minutes, her step-father found them, and fired a shot at the girl. He missed. He then shot and killed Theodore, and then turned the gun on himself. One newspaper reported: “Mad infatuation of a man 37 years old for his 15-year-old step-daughter, resulted in a murder and suicide.
